How To Become A Ghost Writer And Quit Your Day Job

Capture Your Reader With First Sentences That Sizzle

Posted on | May 18, 2007 |

In my last post we spoke about article titles, so today I want to move on and discuss first sentences.  It is your first sentence that will determine whether or not your reader will actually read your entire article or just move on to the next.   Does your first sentence compel them to keep reading or does it just scream boring nonsense?  The truth of the matter is that most writers really don’t have any idea about first sentences and how important they really are.  They just begin their article with the first thing that comes into their heads. Lets go back to the example we used before about Fitness and Exercise. The average article would most likely go something like this: Fitness and exercise is very important for maintaining a healthy body.  It’s very dull and dreary isn’t it.  What about this? Are you frustrated with the lack of energy you have?  Do you wish you could be more active and alert? Do you see what I mean? The second one grabs the readers attention and draws them into your article.  They want to read on to see exactly what you have to say.  This is the impact you want your first sentence to have and if you can produce articles like this for your clients believe me they will keep coming back for more.  To help you out here is a list of first sentence starters that you can use for your articles:

  • It’s unbelievable…..
  • Have you ever imagined……?
  • Has this ever happened to you……?
  • Ever wondered how……..?
  • Let’s face it….
  • Are you frustrated with……?
  • Just imagine if…..
  • Here’s a really simple way to ……..
  • It never fails…..
  • Have you read about this recently………?
  • Are you sick and tired of……?
  • Let me tell you a quick story……
  • By the time you finish reading this……

Hope these will help and put your on the path to creating first sentences that not only capture your reader buy ensure that they read your entire article too.  Remember your clients want the best results and if you don’t produce them, they will find someone else.  For more information on how to secure and keep valuable clients be sure to pick up your copy of Ghostwriting Uncovered Volume 1:  Article Writing. Until next time when we will be talking about strong conclusions, keep writing. Amanda.
