Ghostwriting - The Hidden Writer

How To Become A Ghost Writer And Quit Your Day Job

When Did You Realise You Were A Professional Ghostwriter?

Posted on | September 12, 2007 |

I’ve been ghostwriting now for a couple of years and have been able to quit my day job, be a stay at home mom, and still earn the same pay check each month.  I never really saw myself as a professional though until today.

Since March I have been running my own successful ghostwriting website, published my first e-book on ghostwriting, and started my own ghostwriting newsletter, but even still I didn’t think of myself as a professional.  I guess my image of a professional is one of someone who has worked for years, studied extensively, and worked their way up to the top.  Me, on the other hand, haven’t studied to become a ghostwriter, nor have I worked really hard to get here.  I am just someone who really and truly loves to write period.

As far back as I can remember I have wanted to be a writer.  At the age of 9 I completed my first book the title of which was “The Little Elf Fairy” and I remember it was about a little Elf Fairy who didn’t know his name and set off on a journey to find his mother.  Thinking about it now, I would love to read it again.  Sadly as life went on I lost this story and the many others that I wrote when I was that age.

Through my teen years I turned to poetry and then when I discovered the internet I decided to look for a way to turn my passion for writing into something that might pay.  I wrote poetry and sold some to various websites.  I was thrilled but I wanted more.  I began looking into freelance writing but it seemed like so much hard work.  There were query letters to deal with not to mention those dreaded Editors.

My search continued and I found Elance. This was it, this site gave me the opportunity to really write and get paid.  Within months I was earning my pay check twice each month and I was hooked.  I loved getting new projects to work on and I was learning so much.  My feedback and ratings were excellent too.  Still I never saw myself as a professional.  I had no faith in my work and constantly wondered if it was good enough.  I always thought I could do better but that’s the writer in me.  I don’t think we’re ever satisfied with our work, always trying to make it better, change something here and there, and constantly try to improve it.

Today I got the wakeup call I needed to make me finally realise that yes I am a professional ghostwriter.  My call came at 4pm today.  My husband answered the phone and when the person on the other end asked for ghostwriting services he handed it over.  I couldn’t believe it - someone was ringing me for ghostwriting.  I normally deal with people only through e-mail.  My caller was a gentleman from the United States and he was requesting a quotation for an e-book.  I was in shock, would I be able to answer all his questions - it’s so much easier by e-mail to write everything down.  Well needless to say I was able to answer all of his questions and even pass on a few suggestions of my own.  This new client also informed me that he had rang a few other companies before me.

I still can’t believe it, I am in the same league as companies and I have potential clients calling me at home.  Yes I guess you could truly say my eyes have been opened and I have finally realised that I am a professional ghostwriter.

My apologies to all my readers if I have rambled on a bit on this post and if any one else would like to share their stories please feel free, I’d love to hear them.

Until next time,

Keep Writing

Amanda
